35 Years of Girlschool
2013 marks a landmark year in the world of heavy metal - it's the 35th Anniversary of Girlschool!
Who would have thought that back in 1975, when Enid and Kim founded the rock band Painted Lady, that they would still be together more than 38 years later.
Girlschool were of course formed in 1978, following the demise of Painted Lady - and the serendipitous addition of Denise Dufort on drums and Kelly Johnson on lead guitar.
35 years later - with the current line up of Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams, Denise Dufort and Jackie Chambers - Girlschool are still rocking the aisles.
And with ten live performances already booked for their coral anniversary year, the original Riot Grrrls are still treating us to their blend of heavy metal.
Hit and Run - Revisited
To Celebrate the 30th anniversary of their Classic 1981 album Hit & Run, Girlschool have re-recorded it and it's now on general release in all good record shops, including our online Shop.
The bonus tracks are newly recorded versions of Demolition Boys and a new version of Hit and Run, featuring Warlock's lead singer Doro (Dorothee Pesch) on lead vocals.
The Album is available via Wacken Records through UDR as a CD, Vinyl LP and Digital Download.
Under the Label: UDR with Cat No: UDR0051CD the album's RRP is around £8.89 for the CD version and £26.09 for the 12" Vinyl version. The MP3 album can be downloaded for £7.49 with each individual track priced at around £0.79.
The full tracklisting is in the Girlschool Discography - Albums (CD) Section.
Girlschool
In an industry dominated by testosterone, Girlschool burst onto the scene in 1978, during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal Bands like Motörhead, Iron Maiden, and Def Leppard were just starting to get recognized by the world at large. However, even with a major fan\occasional contributor in Lemmy from Motörhead, Girlschool's road to success was a rocky one.
Several line-up changes and demands by the suits at their record labels to soften their image and music affected their output throughout their career.
They broke up in late 1988, only to reunite in 1992 for their self-titled CD. The original Riot Grrrls, after 3 live CDs and a brief hiatus, returned with a brand new 2002 album, 21st Anniversary: Not That Innocent, celebrating the 21st Anniversary of the birth of Girlschool.
In 2008, they released a new album: Girlschool - Legacy, to celebrate their 30th Anniversary. In 2011, Girlschool re-recorded their 1981 hit album release as Hit and Run Revisited - to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this classic album.
Girlschool: The Unofficial Website
As regular (and maybe not-so-regular) visitors to this website will know - this website consists of two parts: there's the Girlschool part [all about the band Girlschool (obviously!)] and then there's the Gil Weston part [all about ex-Girlschool and Killjoys bass player Ghislaine Weston].
I now have the absolute pleasure of running the new Official Girlschool website (which is based near enough along the lines of this website).
I have therefore decided that since I am now running the Official site, there's no need for me to run this one any longer!
However - as previously mentioned - there are two parts to this website - Girlschool and Gil Weston. Obviously, the Official Girlschool site won't have the Gil Weston part as a separate entity (as it is here) - and so I've moved (or copied) the Gil Weston pages and loaded them as a sub site on my own personal website at http://www.woodysnet.co.uk.
Called The Gil Weston Section, this set of pages mirrors (and slightly improves on?) the Gil Weston pages here - a direct link to the pages is:
http://www.woodysnet.co.uk/gil-weston/
This site will remain live (but not updated very much) until the domain space is up for renewal in February 2014. Then both the domain space and domain name will be dropped.
The Online Shop
We have an Online Shop on the website, where you can buy most Girlschool related products through the shop from our associates at Amazon.
We periodically update and add products to the shop every few weeks, so make sure you come back and visit soon!
The new album Hit and Run - Revisited is available from the shop to order as CD, 12" Vinyl and MP3 download.
